We're excited to announce a significant update to our Arboreal Forest app, introducing new features that enhance the accuracy of tree measurements and provide more comprehensive data collection options.
New Features
1. Cross-Calipering
You can now measure trees from two directions, and the app calculates the average diameter. This method, known as cross-calipering, offers several benefits:
- Improved Accuracy: The estimation of individual tree dimensions becomes more precise.
- Better for Larger Trees: It's particularly valuable for unusually thick trees, as they have a greater impact on volume estimates than thinner trees.
While cross-calipering takes a bit more time, the increased accuracy can be well worth the effort, especially for key trees in your forest inventory.
2. Age and Growth Input
The update also allows you to input the age and growth rate of trees. This additional data opens up new possibilities for forest management:
- Comprehensive Data: Collect more detailed information about each tree.
- Future Enhancements: We're considering using this data to calculate thinning priority in future updates.
See It in Action
To demonstrate these new features, we've ventured into a cold winter forest. Check out our video to see how these updates work in real-world conditions:
Why These Updates Matter
- Enhanced Accuracy: Cross-calipering provides a more reliable estimate of tree diameter, especially for larger trees.
- Better Decision Making: More accurate measurements lead to better volume estimates and forest management decisions.
- Future-Proofing: By collecting age and growth data now, we're laying the groundwork for advanced features in the future.
- Flexibility: Users can choose when to use cross-calipering based on their specific needs and time constraints.
We believe these new features will significantly enhance your forest management capabilities. Whether you're a professional forester or a woodland owner, these tools will help you gather more accurate and comprehensive data about your trees.
Don't forget to update your Arboreal Forest app to access these new features. We're always eager to hear your feedback, so please let us know what you think of these updates and how they're working for you in the field!
