Arboreal is a self-funded Swedish company in Umeå. We build apps that let anyone measure trees with their phone. They have been downloaded more than 500,000 times and are used in almost 100 countries.

Arboreal started with a drone that crashed. Johan Ekenstedt, who has ten years of experience from the forestry industry, borrowed a drone to create 3D models of the forest from the air. On a windy day he lost control of it, and a new idea came up: could the same thing be done with the phone, without sending anything into the air?
In the autumn of 2017 Apple and Google released their AR platforms, and 3D environments could suddenly be processed in real time on a phone. Arboreal was founded in 2018 and started at the business incubator Uminova Innovation in Umeå. Our CTO John-John Markstedt has been part of the company for many years.
In 2019 Arboreal Tree won silver in the SkogsElmia Innovation Award as “the first reliable tree height measurement app for smartphones”, and we won the regional final of Venture Cup. Since then we have added LiDAR measurement, automatic tree species identification, prism plots and centimetre-accurate positioning with Emlid GNSS receivers. In 2022 Sveaskog, Sweden’s largest forest owner, replaced its manual tools with Arboreal Forest.
