This Privacy Policy describes how Arboreal ("we", "us", or "our"), the developer of the Biodiv Field application ("the App"), collects, uses, and shares information when you use our services.

Biodiv Field is designed with privacy in mind. The core functionality of the App runs entirely on your device. Below is a summary of the data the App handles:

On-Device Speech Transcription

The App uses on-device AI models (WhisperKit / KB Whisper) to transcribe your spoken field notes into text. All speech processing happens locally on your device. No audio data is sent to our servers or any third party. We do not collect, store, or have access to your voice recordings or transcriptions.

GPS Location Data

The App collects GPS coordinates from your device to tag each transcribed word and segment with a geographic position. This location data is stored only on your device and is not transmitted to Arboreal or any third party unless you choose to export it.

Species Matching

The App matches species names in your transcriptions against a local species database stored on your device. No data is sent externally during this process.

Apple Intelligence Processing

The App offers optional AI-powered prompts (e.g., generating NVI object descriptions or summaries) using Apple Intelligence. This processing is handled by Apple's on-device and Private Cloud Compute infrastructure according to Apple's own privacy policies. Arboreal does not receive or store any data processed by Apple Intelligence.

Exported Data

When you choose to export data (e.g., as CSV files), the exported files may contain transcribed text, species names, GPS coordinates, and timestamps. Once exported, you are responsible for how this data is stored and shared.

2. Information We Do NOT Collect

  • We do not collect your name, email address, or any account information — the App does not require an account.
  • We do not collect or transmit audio recordings.
  • We do not collect or transmit transcriptions.
  • We do not collect or transmit GPS data.
  • We do not use analytics, tracking, or advertising SDKs.
  • We do not use cookies.

3. Data Storage

All data generated by the App — including transcriptions, GPS coordinates, species matches, and recordings — is stored locally on your device. We do not operate servers that receive or store your field data.

4. Third-Party Services

The App does not integrate with third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking services. The only external processing is through Apple Intelligence, which is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.

5. Data Security

Since all data remains on your device, the security of your data depends on the security of your device. We recommend using a passcode, Face ID, or Touch ID to protect your device.

6. Children's Privacy

Our App does not address anyone under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

7. Your Rights

Since we do not collect or store any personal data on our servers, there is no personal data for us to delete, modify, or provide to you. All your data is under your control on your device.
