Arboreal Forest App: Revolutionizing Tree Measurement with LiDAR Technology

Johan Ekenstedt

16 dec 2020

There's something truly magical about pointing your phone at a tree and watching as it instantly calculates the diameter. This is the reality with the latest update to our Arboreal Forest app, which now harnesses the power of LiDAR technology found in iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max models.

LiDAR: Precision at Your Fingertips

The LiDAR sensors in compatible iPhones measure the distance to 49000 points in the surrounding environment. Our app cleverly uses this data to detect the edges of trees and calculate their diameter with impressive accuracy. It's like having a high-tech forestry tool right in your pocket!

Comprehensive Forest Measurements

But the Arboreal Forest app doesn't stop at diameters. It's a complete digital forestry toolkit that measures:

  • Diameters
  • Basal area
  • Trees per hectare
  • Tree height
  • Volumes

This wealth of data allows for quick and accurate forest inventories, making it an invaluable tool for foresters, researchers, and woodland owners alike.

Not Just for LiDAR-Enabled Devices

Don't have an iPhone with LiDAR? No problem! The Arboreal Forest app also works on phones without LiDAR sensors. In these cases, it utilizes the device's camera to take measurements, ensuring that a wide range of users can benefit from this technology.

Experience It Yourself

We're excited about the potential of this technology to streamline forest management and inventory processes. But don't just take our word for it – we encourage you to experience the magic yourself!

The Arboreal Forest app is available for download on the App Store. Whether you're a forestry professional or simply curious about the trees in your local park, this app offers a new way to interact with and understand our forest environments.

Download the Arboreal Forest app today and step into the future of forestry technology. We can't wait to hear about your experiences with this revolutionary tool!

Finding Lorey's Height Tree in Arboreal Forest

Johan Ekenstedt

13 Nov 2024

In Arboreal Forest version 3.56 we have improved the way of guiding the user to find the tree with Lorey's Height. We have also added a new region in Romania, official volume equation for species and the ability to measure trees with a lot of branches.

How do you find the tree with Lorey's Height?

The app automatically calculates the Quadratic Mean Diameter (QMD) and Basal Area Weighted Mean Diameter (DGV) for all species in the plot. The average between QMD and DGV is very close to the tree with Lorey's Height.

That tree is highlighted in the app with a red circle.

If you want to measure the height of the tree with QMD, you could select that in the settings menu during the measurement session.

Measuring a tree with a lot of branches

If you want to measure a tree with a lot of branches and the Lidar struggles to get a good measurement, you can disable diameter measurement with Lidar in the settings menu in the measurement session.

You will then see two lines on the screen. Align them to the sides of the trunk and press the measure button. The app uses the Lidar to estimate the distance to the tree so the measurement is accurate.

We recommend to only use this method for trees that are hard to measure in the ordinary way as different users align the red lines in differently

New volume equation for species in Romania

We have added the official volume equation for tree species in Romania. You could either measure the diameter and height for many trees and the app will then calculate a height curve by regression and calculate the height for all trees from its diameter. The official volume equation is then used to calculate the volume of each tree.

The other way is to only measure the height on trees that are close to Quadratic Mean Diameter (QMD). The app will then estimate the height for all trees from its diameter using the official equations.

In both cases you are recommended to measure the height of many trees. In the official documents they propose 20-25 trees.

The volume equations have been developed in cooperation with Greengold and Forest Design

Forestry Innovation

From Drone Crash to AR Innovation: The Birth of Arboreal

Johan Ekenstedt

05 May 2019

Five years ago, I borrowed a drone. My goal was simple: to explore its potential applications in forestry. Little did I know that this experiment would set me on a path to revolutionize how we collect and process forest data.

The Drone Experiment

It didn't take long to realize the drone's potential for generating 3D forest data. By comparing images captured during flights, computers could create detailed 3D models of the surveyed area. However, the process was complex and time-consuming, often yielding less-than-ideal results.

A Setback and a New Direction

Drones weren't as advanced then as they are now. On a windy day, I lost control of the aircraft. I watched in horror as it drifted out of sight, its battery depleting rapidly. The drone crashed, and with it, my hopes for an easy way to collect forest data.

But from this setback, a new idea emerged: Could we use the same technology without sending anything into the air?

From Drones to Smartphones

I grabbed my smartphone and started taking numerous pictures of the forest. Back at my computer, I stitched these images together. To my excitement, tree trunks were clearly visible, and I could measure their diameters. However, the process was still too time-consuming for practical use.

The AR Revolution

Fast forward to autumn 2017. Apple and Google released their AR (Augmented Reality) technologies for iOS and Android, respectively. Suddenly, 3D environments could be processed in real-time. What once took minutes was now available in seconds.

The dream of leaving manual forestry tools behind and having everything in your phone was suddenly within reach. And thus, Arboreal's journey began.

The Vision Becomes Reality

Imagine being able to leave all your manual forestry tools behind and carry everything you need in your smartphone. This vision drove us to develop Arboreal's suite of digital forestry tools.

Our AR-based applications allow foresters to:

  • Measure tree diameters with precision
  • Calculate tree heights instantly
  • Estimate timber volumes
  • Conduct forest inventories efficiently

All of this is possible with just a smartphone, making forestry work more accessible, efficient, and accurate than ever before.

Looking to the Future

From a crashed drone to cutting-edge AR technology, our journey at Arboreal has been one of innovation and perseverance. We're excited about the future of digital forestry and the role we're playing in shaping it.

As we continue to develop and refine our tools, we remain committed to our original vision: making forestry work simpler, more efficient, and more accurate through the power of technology.

We invite you to join us on this exciting journey. Whether you're a professional forester, a woodland owner, or simply someone interested in the intersection of technology and nature, there's a place for you in the digital forestry revolution.

Stay tuned for more updates, and don't hesitate to reach out if you want to learn more about how Arboreal is transforming the world of forestry, one smartphone at a time.
